Scroll to the footer. Licensed operators publish the number there, next to the name of the company that holds it and the age notices. Copy both the number and the company name, because the register can be searched either way.
If a site takes British money and shows no number anywhere, stop. That is not a paperwork slip — displaying it is part of the licence itself.
Match it on the register
Open the Commission’s public register and paste the number into the search box. The register covers licensed businesses and individuals, the regulatory action taken against them and the premises they run. The entry you want shows the account number, the activities the licence permits and the next renewal date.
Read two fields properly rather than glancing at them. The first is the company name: a brand is rarely the licensee, and one licensed company often runs several sites under different names. The second is the list of activities, because that is what the licence actually permits.
Read what the licence covers
Operating licences are issued under Parts 5 and 6 of the Gambling Act 2005, and they are granted activity by activity. A remote casino operating licence authorises online casino games; bingo and general betting are separate permissions, which is why one company can appear in the register with several licences at once.
What the register cannot tell you is how the business behaves: how quickly it pays, how it handles withdrawals and what its bonus terms hide. Licensing is the floor, not the verdict — our rating method starts there and carries on.
One last habit worth keeping: check the register before you deposit, not after a payout is delayed. By then you are arguing about money rather than reading a public record.
