The safer-gambling tools in a British account are dull and effective: a cap on what goes in, a clock that interrupts play, and a switch that closes the account for a while. The first of them changed definition in 2026.

A deposit limit now means one thing

From 30 June 2026 every online operator must offer a limit based solely on the amount you pay in over a set period, and only that kind of limit may be called a deposit limit. It has to be offered on a fixed time frame — daily, weekly or monthly — and with at least the same prominence as any other financial limit.

Operators may still offer net limits, which count deposits less withdrawals, alongside it. The point of the rule is that the words on the button now mean the same thing everywhere, with the supporting guidance in force from 30 September 2026.

Which way changes take effect

The asymmetry is the useful part. A decrease applies immediately. An increase has to wait out a 24-hour cooling-off period before it does anything, so a limit raised in the middle of a session cannot fund that session.

Reality checks sit beside them: a timed pop-up that interrupts play and shows how long you have been playing and how much you are up or down. A time-out is heavier again — a voluntary mini-exclusion, typically available from 24 hours up to six weeks, which closes the account for the chosen period.

Where they live

Look under account settings, my account, safer gambling or responsible gambling, depending on the site. Nothing here needs a support ticket; they are all self-service, and they take effect on the account rather than on one game.

Set the deposit limit first, on the day you open the account, while the number is still an abstraction. If limits are not holding, the next steps are a bank gambling block and GAMSTOP, and the helpline on our safer gambling page is free to call at any hour.
