Winnings are not taxed in the hands of a British player. Casino, bingo, lottery and betting wins are all outside Income Tax, they are not normally Capital Gains, and they do not go on a self-assessment return. HMRC’s own guidance on business income puts it plainly: money received from betting or gambling is not taxable income.

Why the player pays nothing

The arrangement dates from 2001, when the duty moved from the punter to the operator. Before that a betting shop deducted tax from the stake or the return; since then the state takes its share from the bookmaker or casino, and the customer’s win arrives whole.

That is also why the rule survives a big win. There is no threshold at which a jackpot becomes taxable, because the tax is not levied on the player at any level.

Three cases that can still be taxable

  • Interest. Once the money sits in a savings account, the interest is taxed in the ordinary way. The win is untaxed; the yield is not.
  • Gambling as a trade. If the activity amounts to a trade, profession or vocation, the earnings can become taxable income. The bar is high and rarely met by individual players, but it exists.
  • Gifts. Handing winnings to family engages the normal inheritance tax rules, exactly as any other gift of cash would.

None of those turns the original win into taxable income. They tax what happens next, and the distinction is worth keeping straight in any conversation with an accountant.

What to keep anyway

No return is needed, but a record helps when a large sum arrives in a current account and the bank asks where it came from. A screenshot of the payout, the account statement and the operator’s confirmation email answer the question in one go.
