Financial risk checks explained

On this page
On 7 July 2026 the Gambling Commission confirmed it will bring in financial risk assessments in stages rather than all at once. The first stage, announced for that summer, applies only to the largest operators and only to customers whose net deposits reach £5,000 or more in a rolling 24-hour period.
That threshold is deliberately extreme. The Commission described it as a very unusually high spending pattern, reached by fewer than 0.5% of customers, and said the vast majority of players will never be assessed at all.
What is actually checked
The assessments are run by credit reference agencies using data they already hold, which is why the Commission calls them frictionless and document-free: nothing is requested from you, and the check leaves no mark on your credit score.
The regulator has also been careful about the label. These are not affordability checks and they do not produce a budget for you. They flag a pattern of financial vulnerability to the operator, which then decides what to do about it.
The thresholds after the first stage
The staged rollout starts high and comes down. The Commission’s stated longer-term thresholds are £1,000 in a rolling 24-hour period or £3,000 over a rolling 90-day period for customers aged 25 and over, and £750 or £2,000 over the same windows for customers under 25.
All of those figures are net deposits — money paid in, less money withdrawn — with a single operator, not a total across every account you hold.
If you are asked for documents
A document request is not part of this scheme. Operators have separate duties on identity and anti-money-laundering, and those are what usually produce a request for a bank statement or a payslip. Identity itself has to be settled before you play at all, which is covered in our note on account verification.
If checks of any kind are arriving because the sums are getting away from you, the tools that help are on the account side: limits, time-outs and, if needed, GAMSTOP.
