There is a statutory ceiling on what you can stake on an online slot in Great Britain. For customers aged 25 and over it is £5 per game cycle. For customers aged 18 to 24 it is £2. The £5 limit took effect on 9 April 2025 and the lower band for young adults followed on 21 May 2025.

The change was made by secondary legislation — the Gambling Act 2005 (Operating Licence Conditions) (Amendment) Regulations 2025 — after the government set out both figures in its February 2024 response to the Gambling Act review.

Per game cycle, not per spin

The regulator’s wording is “per game cycle” rather than “per spin”, and the distinction matters on games that resolve over several stages. A cascade, a re-spin or a bought feature belongs to the cycle it came from; the cap applies to what you committed to that cycle, not to each animation the game shows you afterwards.

Two age bands, one account

The band you fall into is decided by the date of birth the operator already verified before letting you play, so there is nothing for you to set. When you cross 25 the stake selector simply opens up to £5.

Note what the limit does not do. It applies to online slots offered by licensed operators; it is not a general cap on online gambling, and table games, live dealer tables and betting sit outside it. Land-based machines run on their own category rules, which is why a pub machine and a slot on your phone can carry very different maximums.

What it changes in practice

For most players it changes nothing at all: typical British slot stakes have long sat well under a pound. Where it bites is on high-volatility games and bought features, where £10 or £20 a cycle used to be possible — and on jackpot titles, where the qualifying stake has had to be redesigned to fit under the ceiling.

If you want a hard stop of your own well below the statutory one, set a deposit limit instead. The stake cap protects the size of a single bet; a deposit limit protects the size of the session.
